Bridgecourt House is ideally located in the heart of Kilkenny City, bringing you close to plenty of local amenities and attractions. Whether you want to walk around the city or plan to travel further afield, here are a few suggestions of things to do in Kilkenny during your stay. You will also find a variety of leaflets and brochures for local amenities in the main hall on your arrival.

Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny Castle Located in the heart of Kilkenny City, Kilkenny Castle was constructed in 12th century. Steeped in history and home to the Butler family for over five hundred years, the castle is one of Ireland’s most recognisable, where you will also find the Butler Gallery here complete with an amazing selection of art works down through the ages. Guided tours are available every 20 minutes throughout the summer and usually take 40-45 minutes for the full tour.

St. Canices Cathedral

St. Canices Cathedral Located a mere minute walk from Bridgecourt Guesthouse, St. Canice’s Cathedral is a 13th century cathedral located in the heart of the city. The 9th century round tower beside the cathedral offers magnificent views of Kilkenny with views for miles in all directions. A small ticket charge grants to access to the cathedral and round tower while a combination ticket is also available to get access to Rothe House museum.

Rothe House Museum

Rothe House Located on Parliament Street, just a few minutes walk from Bridgecourt House, Rothe House Museum is a perfect example of a Tudor house in Kilkenny. With rotating exhibitions throughout the year you can explore the whole of the house, built in 1594. The house is open to the public from 10:30am Monday to Saturday.

Design Centre and National Crafts Gallery

The Design Centre The Kilkenny Design Centre and adjoining National Crafts Gallery are located directly opposite Kilkenny Castle (see above). While here you can shop for some of the artistic delights that Kilkenny has to offer from jewellery through to pottery while the Gallery also has rotating exhibitions through the year. The National Craft Gallery is the Crafts Council of Ireland’s flagship exhibition space. It is housed in Castle Yard, the former stables of Kilkenny Castle. In 1965 these late 18th century buildings were converted to house Kilkenny Design Workshops. Today they are home to the CCoI headquarters.

The Black Abbey

The Black Abbey Founded by William Marshall the Younger, for the Dominican Friars in 1225, the Black Abbey was also known as theConvent of the One and Undivided Trinity. It was suppressed in 1543, converted into a courthouse and served as such until the end of the 17th century. Partially restored in 1778, the Abbey did not become a place of public worship until the mid-19th century when it was converted into a parish church. Open to the public today, the abbey is located just off Black Mill Street and can be accessed via Abbey Street, 3 minutes walk from Bridgecourt House.

Golfing In Kilkenny

Golfing In Kilkenny Kilkenny is home to some of the country’s best gold courses including Callan Golf Club, Castlecomer Golf Club, Gowran Golf Club, the Kilkenny Golf Club and the luxurious Mount Juliet Golf Club which has played host to the American Express World Championship in recent years. Throughout the year you will find the Rhythm & Roots Festival (May), Cat Laugh’s Comedy Festival (June), Ballykeefe Midsummer Festival (June - August), Kilkenny Arts Festival (August), Irish Conker Championship (October)
